Vitamin C (topical L-ascorbic acid)

Topical vitamin C is the standard antioxidant serum ingredient, used for brightening, sun-damage repair, and pigment. A 2023 systematic review of randomized controlled trials found it genuinely improves photoaged skin and helps melasma, though effects are gradual and generally smaller than prescription options. Its biggest practical problem is chemistry: L-ascorbic acid is unstable and penetrates skin poorly unless formulated at low pH, so many products on shelves have likely lost potency before they reach your face.

How it works

Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals generated by UV light and pollution before they damage collagen and DNA. It is also a required cofactor for the enzymes that build collagen, and it inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme melanocytes use to make pigment. That combination explains its three marketed effects: antioxidant protection, firmness, and brightening.

For wrinkles and fine lines

Moderate evidence

A 2023 systematic review of randomized controlled trials concluded topical vitamin C usefully improves photodamaged skin, with treated skin appearing smoother and less wrinkled than placebo-treated skin across the included vehicle-controlled trials. Trials are mostly small (dozens of patients) and 12 weeks to 6 months long, and formulations vary widely, which limits how precisely effects can be estimated.

For melasma

Moderate evidence

In a 16-week double-blind split-face RCT in 16 women, 4% hydroquinone beat 5% ascorbic acid on subjective improvement (93% versus 62.5% good-to-excellent), but objective color measurements showed no statistical difference, and vitamin C caused side effects in only 1 of 16 patients versus 11 of 16 for hydroquinone. The 2023 systematic review supports it as a gentler second-line option, often used alongside other agents rather than alone.

For dullness and texture

Limited evidence

Brightening is vitamin C's loudest marketing claim but its softest evidence base. A 2023 meta-analysis of topical agents for pigment disorders found ascorbic acid reduced pigment severity from baseline, though it was among the less potent agents tested, and trials measuring overall radiance or glow as an endpoint are rare and small. The visible effect for most users is modest and takes 8 to 12 weeks.

Only small, short, or lower-quality studies exist. Treat marketing claims about this use with caution.

Risks and what can go wrong

One of the safest actives: main complaints are mild stinging at low pH, occasional irritation at 15 to 20% concentrations, and yellow staining from oxidized product. No pregnancy concerns. Oxidized serums (dark orange or brown) are spent and can stain skin; discard them.

The practical details

OTC only. Evidence-backed formulas use 10 to 20% L-ascorbic acid at pH below 3.5, often stabilized with vitamin E and ferulic acid. Applied in the morning under sunscreen, where its antioxidant effect complements UV filters. Buy small opaque or airless bottles and replace once the color darkens. Derivatives like sodium ascorbyl phosphate are more stable but have less human efficacy data.
