Glycolic acid (AHA)
Ingredients
Texture smoothing is glycolic acid's most reliable effect. A controlled forearm study applying 25% AHA lotion for 6 months found about a 25% increase in skin thickness with improved elastic fiber quality and collagen density versus placebo, and the 8% cream RCT found improvement in overall photodamage scores driven largely by texture and roughness. Effects at typical 5 to 10% leave-on strengths are gradual, over 8 to 24 weeks.
Salicylic acid (BHA)
Ingredients
As a 20 to 30% professional peel, salicylic acid has documented efficacy and safety across Fitzpatrick skin types for texture, photodamage, and comedonal skin, per a 2015 evidence review. Its keratolytic action smooths rough, congested skin within a few sessions. Leave-on 2% products produce milder, slower versions of the same effect.
Hyaluronic acid (topical)
Ingredients
Hydration is the one thing topical HA does convincingly. An 8-week study of a nano-HA formulation in humans measured skin hydration increases up to 96% and elasticity gains up to 55%, and a comparative study of HA creams at 50 to 2,000 kDa molecular weights found all significantly improved hydration and elasticity versus control. Studies are small (dozens of participants) and industry-linked, but the direction of effect is consistent and matches basic chemistry.
Skin boosters (microdroplet hyaluronic acid)
Injectables
In the randomized evaluator-blind trial behind Skinvive's FDA approval, VYC-12L significantly improved cheek smoothness, fine lines, and hydration versus control. An earlier prospective study found 96.2 percent of patients were smoothness responders at month 1 and 76.3 percent at month 4, with skin hydration significantly improved through month 9. Effects are real but modest and centered on hydration and surface quality.
Vitamin C (topical L-ascorbic acid)
Ingredients
Brightening is vitamin C's loudest marketing claim but its softest evidence base. A 2023 meta-analysis of topical agents for pigment disorders found ascorbic acid reduced pigment severity from baseline, though it was among the less potent agents tested, and trials measuring overall radiance or glow as an endpoint are rare and small. The visible effect for most users is modest and takes 8 to 12 weeks.
HydraFacial
Treatments
The foundational study randomized 20 women to 6 hydradermabrasion sessions versus manual serum application and found improved skin quality clinically and histologically, including increased epidermal thickness and skin antioxidant levels, in the device group only. That is a single 20-person trial from 2008; it supports a real short-term smoothness and radiance effect, nothing more durable, and results fade without repeat visits.
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)
Injectables
A 2024 systematic review of injectable PRF found 7 studies with 130 total patients across alopecia and facial rejuvenation, reporting improved skin texture, elasticity, and appearance, but flagged the absence of controls, small samples, and short follow-up. Improvements in skin thickness and elasticity have the most support among skin endpoints; durability past 6 months is unproven.
Exosome therapy
Injectables
Topical exosome serums sold for glow and texture are cosmetics, not drugs, and a 2026 scoping review of the commercial market found products varied widely in exosome source and disclosed almost nothing about isolation methods, concentration, or shelf life, with minimal clinical evidence per product. There is no way for a buyer to verify a given bottle contains active exosomes at all. Individual small studies show texture improvements after device-assisted application, but the device is a confounder.
